Creating your first VIP tier
Every VIP program starts with a default base tier (threshold of 0). This is the tier all customers are placed into when they first join your loyalty program. You can rename it and customise it, but you can't delete it.
To add additional tiers, go to VIP Tiers → Tiers → Add Tier.
You can create up to 10 tiers in total.
Tier settings
Each tier has the following settings:
Name - The tier name displayed to customers (e.g., Silver, Gold, Platinum).
Threshold - The amount a customer needs to reach to enter this tier. What the threshold represents depends on your Entry Method:
If your entry method is Amount spent, the threshold is a dollar amount (e.g., $500)
If your entry method is Points earned, the threshold is a points total (e.g., 1,000 points)
If your entry method is Number of orders, the threshold is an order count (e.g., 10 orders)
The base tier always has a threshold of 0. Each additional tier must have a unique, positive threshold.
Tier badge - Choose a badge colour for the tier, or upload your own custom icon. The badge appears next to the tier name across the widget, customer account pages, and admin.
Points multiplier
Each tier can have a points multiplier that increases how many points customers earn. For example:
Bronze: 1x (default — no bonus)
Silver: 1.5x (earns 50% more points)
Gold: 2x (earns double points)
You can choose whether the multiplier applies to purchases only or all earning rules (including social follows, birthdays, etc.) from the Points Multiplier setting on the Tiers tab.
The earn rate is calculated as: base earn rate × tier multiplier. So if your base rate is 5 points per $1 spent, a Gold customer with a 2x multiplier earns 10 points per $1.
Entry rewards
Entry rewards are one-time rewards automatically given to a customer when they reach a tier for the first time. These are a great way to celebrate a customer's achievement and encourage continued engagement.
For example:
Reach Silver → receive a $10 discount code
Reach Gold → receive a 15% off code
Reach Platinum → receive free shipping for life
Entry rewards support all reward types: fixed discount, percentage discount, free shipping, and free product.
Key details:
Entry rewards are issued once per tier - if a customer drops down and re-earns the tier, they won't receive the same reward again.
If a customer is downgraded, any unused entry rewards from their old tier are automatically revoked (the discount code is deleted from Shopify).
Entry rewards are issued during bulk recalculations too — so if you launch your VIP program and backdate it, qualifying customers will receive their entry rewards.
Tier-specific rewards
Beyond entry rewards, you can create rewards that are only redeemable by customers in a specific tier. These appear in the customer's rewards centre and checkout, but only while they hold that tier status.
For example:
Gold members get access to an exclusive 20% off reward (costs 500 points to redeem)
Platinum members get a free product reward (costs 1,000 points)
Tier-specific rewards work like regular rewards but are filtered by the customer's current tier. If a customer is downgraded, they lose access to rewards from their old tier.
