Connect your Recharge account to Mage to enable subscription milestone tracking and loyalty reward discounts on subscriptions.
Key features
Subscription milestone tracking. Count Recharge subscription renewals toward a Subscription Milestone earning rule, so customers earn points as they stay subscribed.
Loyalty rewards on subscriptions. Loyalty reward discount codes are created in Recharge automatically, so customers can redeem points and use the same code on their subscription, not only on one-time orders.
Use cases
Reward a customer the moment they start their first subscription, as a signup gift.
Reward loyal, long-term subscribers after a set number of successful renewals.
Let customers spend points on a discount that also works on their recurring subscription orders.
Supported checkout
This integration supports Recharge running on Shopify Checkout Integration (SCI). Your store should be using Recharge with Shopify Checkout Integration.
Before you start
You need:
Recharge installed and active on your Shopify store
A Mage Starter plan or above
Connecting Recharge
Go to the Integrations page in your Mage admin.
Find the Recharge card and click Manage.
Click Connect Recharge. You will be redirected to Recharge to approve the connection.
Approve the requested permissions.
After approval, Recharge redirects you to a confirmation page.
Click Go to Recharge Integration to return to your Mage admin.
You should now see the Recharge card showing as Connected, along with the date you connected.
Permissions and access scopes
When you connect, Recharge asks you to approve the access Mage needs (step 4 above). Mage requests the following scopes:
Orders: Read access
Discounts: Read and write access
Subscriptions: Read access
Customers: Read access
Read access lets Mage track subscription renewals and match customers and orders. Write access on discounts is what allows Mage to create your loyalty reward codes inside Recharge so they work on subscriptions.
If these permissions ever need to be refreshed, disconnect Recharge and connect it again from the Integrations page to re-approve the latest scopes.
How it ties into Subscription Milestones
The Recharge integration ties into the Subscription Milestone earning rule. Once connected, Mage will start counting Recharge subscriptions towards your customer's subscription milestone.
Setting up the Subscription Milestone earning rule
Go to Earning Rules in your Mage admin.
Add or edit the Subscription Milestone rule.
Set the renewal threshold. This is how many subscription orders a customer must complete before earning the reward. For example:
Threshold of 1 awards the customer as soon as they sign up for their first subscription. This works as a signup gift.
Threshold of 5 awards the customer after their fifth successful renewal. This rewards loyal long-term subscribers.
Set the points to award and any approval delay.
Save.
The milestone is awarded once per customer, per subscription. If a customer subscribes to three different products, they earn the milestone three times. If a customer cancels a subscription and later resubscribes to the same product, that counts as a new subscription and can earn the milestone again.
What happens to existing subscribers
When you first connect Recharge, customers with active subscriptions are not retroactively credited for their past renewals. Their progress toward the milestone starts from their next renewal after you connect.
If you need historical renewals to count, contact Mage support at [email protected] to request a one-time backfill against your Recharge account.
Using loyalty reward discounts on subscriptions
When Recharge is connected, loyalty reward discount codes that are meant for subscriptions are automatically created in Recharge too. Your customers can redeem a reward and use the same code on their Recharge subscription, not only on one-time orders.
This applies to any reward where the Purchase Type is set to Subscription or Both. We recommend Both, so the code works on both one-time orders and subscriptions.
What gets carried over
Percentage, fixed amount, and free shipping rewards
Minimum spend requirement
Expiry date
Whether the discount applies to the first payment, a set number of payments, or all payments
A single product or a single collection the reward is limited to
Things to be aware of
Each reward code can only be used once. When a customer uses it on a subscription, the matching one-time code is switched off automatically, and the same happens the other way around. This stops a reward from being used twice.
Recharge allows only one discount on a subscription at a time. If a subscription already has a discount applied, a new reward code cannot be added to it.
Flexible rewards, where the customer chooses how many points to spend, are not added to subscriptions at this time.
If a reward is limited to a specific product variant, on a subscription it applies to the whole product.
If a reward is limited to more than one product or collection, it is not added to subscriptions. Recharge supports only one product or one collection per discount. Rewards limited to a single product or a single collection work as normal.
On subscriptions, free shipping makes shipping fully free. Recharge does not support a maximum shipping amount, so if your reward sets one, it is ignored.
Free shipping rewards apply to both one-time and subscription purchases on Recharge, even if the reward is set to subscriptions only. This is a Recharge requirement.
A minimum spend is rounded down to a whole number on subscriptions. For example, 49.99 becomes 49.
The number of times a discount shows as used in Shopify can take a little while to update. This is normal and does not affect the reward.
Making sure reward codes are used only once on subscriptions
To make sure each loyalty reward code can only be used once on Recharge subscriptions, we strongly recommend enabling a Recharge account setting called increment_discount_used_on_apply_to_purchase.
This setting is not available in the Recharge dashboard, so you will need to contact Recharge support and ask them to turn it on for your store. You can quote the setting name above to their team.
Once it is enabled, the single use limit on your reward codes is applied to Recharge subscription orders in the same way it already works at your Shopify checkout. If your store uses Recharge, we recommend doing this as part of your setup.
Disconnecting Recharge
Go to the Integrations page.
Find the Recharge card and click Manage.
Click Disconnect and confirm.
