A drop adds a one-time bonus to a group of customers' balances at a time you choose. Customers do not need to do anything. The bonus is temporary: whatever they have not spent by the expiry date is removed.
A drop is different from a bonus campaign. A campaign boosts what customers earn from their actions. A drop simply adds an amount to their balance. On a store credit program this feature is called a Store Credit Drop.
How to create a drop
From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.
In the Points Drops section, click Create Drop.
Enter a Drop name. Customers do not see this.
Enter the amount each customer receives.
Choose the Audience.
Set the date and time the drop should land, in your store's timezone.
Set the Expiry window: how long customers have to spend it, in hours, days or weeks from the drop time.
Check the Summary panel, then click Schedule drop. Or click Save as draft to finish later.
Audience options
Audience | Who receives the drop |
All loyalty members | Everyone who is a customer in Mage. This is not every Shopify customer. Shoppers who have never joined your program or earned anything are not included. |
VIP Tier | Customers currently in the tier you choose. |
Shopify Segment | Customers in a Shopify segment. Paste the segment ID from your Shopify admin. Segment members who have not joined your program yet have the drop reserved for them and receive it the moment they join, as long as that is before the drop expires. |
The audience is worked out at the drop time. Anyone added to a segment or tier after that does not receive it.
How it works
At the drop time the amount is added to each customer's balance and appears in their activity as a drop.
When a customer redeems, their drop balance is spent first, so the bonus is used before anything they earned themselves.
When the expiry window passes, any unspent drop balance is removed. Anything already spent stays spent.
Drops do not count towards VIP tier progress.
Customers who are excluded from the program are skipped, and no customer receives the same drop twice.
Drops do not send any email, SMS or marketing event. The bonus appears silently in the customer's balance. Send your own announcement when the drop lands so customers know to use it.
Drop status
Draft: saved but not scheduled.
Scheduled: will land automatically at the drop time. You can still edit anything until then.
Processing: landing now. It can no longer be edited or stopped.
Completed: everyone has received it. Open the drop to see the recipient list.
Failed: something went wrong. The error is shown on the drop and we are notified automatically. Create a new drop with the same settings to retry.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming All loyalty members means every Shopify customer. Use a Shopify Segment if you want to reach shoppers who have not joined yet.
Scheduling in your own timezone. Drop times use your store's timezone. The form shows the current shop time under the picker so you can check.
Not announcing the drop. Without an email or SMS, most customers will never notice the bonus before it expires.
