Automated Wallet Pass Push Notifications

Send push notifications automatically based on loyalty activity: when a reward unlocks, when points are about to expire, and when a claimed reward is about to expire.

Written by Kris James

What Automated Pushes are

Automated pushes send a notification to your Wallet Pass holders based on their loyalty activity, rather than on a schedule you set. Once you switch one on, it keeps working in the background: a customer gets notified the moment they unlock a reward, when their points are about to expire, or when a reward they claimed is about to run out.

They sit alongside manual campaigns. Use a manual campaign for a one-off announcement (see: Wallet Pass Push Campaigns), and automated pushes for the messages you want to happen on their own.

Your Wallet Pass must be enabled first. See: Wallet Pass - Overview & Setup.

Where to find them

  1. In the Mage Loyalty app, go to Wallet Pass → Push Campaigns.

  2. Below your manual campaigns, you'll see the Automated Pushes card listing the three types, each with an Enabled or Disabled badge.

  3. Click Configure on the one you want to set up.

The three notifications

Notification

When it sends

Reward available

When a customer's points balance crosses the cost of a reward.

Points expiring

Ahead of a customer's points expiring, following your points expiry warning window.

Reward expiring

Ahead of a claimed reward expiring.

Reward available

Sends whenever a customer earns enough points to reach a reward. Set the notification title and body, then choose what happens when a single points change unlocks more than one reward at once:

  • Send a single notification for the next reward reached, or

  • Send a bundled notification that mentions how many rewards are now available.

Delivery rule: Only notify for rewards costing at least a certain number of points. This lets you highlight the rewards you care about and stay quiet on the cheap ones.

Points expiring

Reminds customers before their points expire so they have a chance to use them.

Delivery rule: Only notify customers whose points balance is over a certain amount, so you reach the customers with a balance worth using.

The timing of this notification follows your points expiry warning window (set in your points expiry settings), so it goes out at the same time as your existing expiry reminder. If points expiry is not switched on for your programme, this notification has nothing to trigger from.

Reward expiring

Reminds customers before a reward they have already claimed expires.

Delivery rule: Choose how many days before the reward's expiry the reminder should send.

Personalising with shortcodes

Drop a shortcode into your title or body and it is replaced with the customer's own details when the notification sends. The live preview on the right of the form fills them with sample values so you can see the result.

Good to know

  • Character limits. Titles are capped at 35 characters and bodies at 150, the same as manual campaigns, so your message shows in full on the lock screen rather than being trimmed. The counter under each field keeps you inside the limit.

  • They share Google's daily limit. Google Wallet allows 3 notifications per pass in any 24 hour period, and automated pushes draw from the same allowance as your manual campaigns. If a customer is close to that limit on Android, a later automated push may not arrive.

  • Customers won't be over-messaged. Across all your wallet pass notifications (manual campaigns and automated pushes combined), Mage sends at most 3 to any one customer in a rolling 24 hours, and never more than one per hour. This applies to both Apple and Google.

  • Nothing sends until you switch it on. Each notification starts Disabled. Tick Enabled and click Save for it to begin sending.
