A custom reward is a reward that you fulfil yourself, outside of Mage. The customer spends their points, you get notified, and you take it from there. No discount codes are generated.
What can you use it for?
Anything you can arrange personally. Some ideas include:
A free one-to-one consultation or styling session
An invite to an exclusive event or early product access
A hand-picked gift added to the customer's next order
A personalised shout-out
Because there is no discount code, you are free to offer things a code could never cover.
What your customer sees
On your storefront the custom reward appears alongside your other rewards, showing its name, points cost, and the description you write. When the customer redeems it:
Their points are deducted, just like any other reward.
Instead of a discount code, they see your confirmation message, for example "Thanks! We will be in touch within 2 working days to arrange this."
The reward sits in their rewards list with that same message, so they can always find it again.
Once you have delivered the reward and marked it as used (see below), the message changes to your used message, so the customer knows it is complete.
Setting up a Custom Reward
To create this reward in your Loyalty program:
Go to Loyalty Program > Redeeming Points
Under Redeeming Points, click Add Reward
Select Custom
Edit the reward to your preferences (see options below)
Click Save
You can also create a custom reward that is exclusive to a VIP tier. Open the tier under VIP Tiers, click Add Reward in the tier rewards section, and select Custom. Only customers in that tier (or above) will be able to redeem it.
Reward Configuration Options
Reward Name | Defines how the reward will display to customers. We recommend something clear such as 'Free 30 Minute Consultation' |
Storefront Description | A short description shown to customers before they redeem, so they know exactly what they are getting |
Points Cost | The number of reward points the customer needs to spend to redeem the reward |
Confirmation Message | Shown to the customer immediately after they redeem, in place of a discount code. Use it to set expectations, for example 'Thanks! We will email you within 2 working days to arrange this' |
Used Message | Optional. Shown on the reward once you mark it as used, for example 'Hope you enjoyed it!'. If left blank, a friendly default message is used |
Notification Method | How you want to hear about each redemption: Email, Webhook, both, or none. Email is generally the preferred option. |
Notification Email | The address we email each time a customer redeems. Pre-filled with your store email; you can add more addresses separated by commas. Replying to the notification goes straight to the customer |
Webhook URL | For connecting redemptions to other tools such as Zapier or your own systems. |
Custom Image | Optionally upload your own image for the reward, shown on your storefront. Available when editing a saved reward |
Tracking redemptions
You do not need to rely on notification emails to keep track. Every custom reward has its own Redemptions page:
Go to Loyalty Program > Redeeming Points (or the VIP tier the reward belongs to)
On the reward's row, click the Redemptions button. The number next to it shows how many redemptions are still waiting on you
The page lists every customer who has redeemed the reward, with their email, when they redeemed, and the points they spent. Use it as your to-do list:
Mark as used. Once you have delivered the reward, open the menu on the row and choose Mark as used. The customer's reward updates to show your used message, and the outstanding count goes down. You can mark it back as active if you change your mind
Cancel Reward. If a redemption should not have happened, you can cancel it with or without refunding the customer's points
Good to know
Custom rewards never create a discount code, so there is nothing for the customer to enter at checkout. Fulfilment is entirely in your hands.
Custom rewards do not expire, since there is no code to expire. The Redemptions page is the record of what is outstanding.
Customers redeem custom rewards from your storefront loyalty widget, sidebar, and loyalty page.
Custom rewards are available on the Growth plan and above.
