Skio Subscriptions Integration

Connect Skio to Mage so subscribers can redeem points or store credit for discounts on their renewals and earn a bonus at subscription milestones.

Written by Kris James

Connect your Skio account to Mage to reward your subscribers. This integration lets customers exchange their points or store credit for discounts on their subscription renewals, and lets you award bonus points or store credit when subscribers start a subscription or reach a renewal milestone.

Setup takes a couple of minutes. All you need is an API key from Skio. There is nothing else to configure inside Skio.

Before you start

You need:

  • Skio installed and active on your Shopify store, with access to the Skio dashboard.

  • A Mage Essential plan or above.

1. Create an API key in Skio

  1. Log in to your Skio dashboard.

  2. Go to Settings, then API & Integrations, then API.

  3. Generate a new API key. Give it a name like Mage Loyalty so you can recognise it later.

  4. Copy the key straight away. Skio only shows it once. You will paste it into Mage in the next step.

2. Connect Skio to Mage

  1. Go to the Integrations page in your Mage admin.

  2. Find the Skio card and click Manage.

  3. Paste your Skio API key into the field.

  4. Click Connect Skio. Mage checks the key with Skio and saves it once it is verified.

You should now see the Skio card showing as Connected. If you see an error, double-check that you copied the full key and that it was generated in the same Skio account that runs this store.

3. Reward your Skio subscribers

With Skio connected, you can reward your subscribers in two ways:

  • Let them spend their points or store credit on a discount applied to a subscription renewal.

  • Award them bonus points or store credit when they reach a subscription milestone you set, including starting a new subscription.

Apply rewards to a subscription

The Skio integration powers the Apply to subscription button. Instead of using a reward as a one-time code at checkout, customers can add it straight to one of their Skio subscriptions so it comes off a future renewal.

The button works with these reward types:

  • Fixed amount rewards, for example $5 off.

  • Percentage rewards, for example 10% off.

  • Flexible rewards, where the customer picks how many points or how much store credit to use.

To turn it on:

  1. Check your reward's purchase type. It must be set to Subscription or Both. A one-time reward cannot be applied to a subscription, so the button stays hidden if the reward is set to One-time only.

  2. Turn on "Show apply to subscription" on the block where customers redeem, such as the Ways to Redeem or Flexible Redemption block.

  3. Save.

What customers see

When a signed-in customer with an active Skio subscription redeems an eligible reward:

  • They can choose a one-time discount code for checkout, or Apply to subscription.

  • When they click Apply to subscription, a window opens showing their active Skio subscriptions, with the product, price, delivery frequency and next billing date for each.

  • They pick one, confirm, and Mage adds the discount to that subscription in Skio automatically.

If a customer has no active subscriptions, the window lets them know there is nothing to apply the discount to. Paused subscriptions are not shown.

How the discount respects your reward settings

The discount that lands on the subscription follows everything you configured on the reward. That includes:

  • Minimum spend

  • How many renewals the discount runs for, such as the next payment only, the next three, or all renewals

  • Product or collection restrictions

  • Discount combinations

For flexible rewards, we advise setting the discount to Limit discount to multiple recurring payments and setting Number of recurring payments to 1, so the discount applies to the customer's next renewal only.

Reward subscription milestones

The subscription milestone earning rule awards bonus points or store credit when a customer reaches a chosen number of completed subscription orders. With Skio connected, Mage awards the bonus when a subscriber reaches your threshold.

  1. Go to Earning Rules in your Mage admin.

  2. Add or edit the Subscription Milestone rule.

  3. Set the renewal threshold and the points or store credit to award. Set it to 1 to reward customers for starting a new subscription, or a higher number such as 3 to reward their third order.

  4. Make sure the rule is Active and save.

When the bonus arrives. Milestone points or store credit usually appear within a few minutes of the order.

How the count works. Each subscription can earn the milestone once. Customers who were already past your threshold when you turned the rule on are not retro-awarded.

Disconnecting Skio

  1. Go to the Integrations page.

  2. Find the Skio card and click Manage.

  3. Click Disconnect and confirm.

Mage removes your API key straight away. Discounts that have already been applied to subscriptions stay in place and Skio keeps honouring them at renewal. New discounts applied to subscriptions and new milestone awards stop until you reconnect.

If you no longer plan to reconnect, you can also delete the Mage Loyalty API key in your Skio dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Which subscriptions can my customers apply discounts to?

Any of their active Skio subscriptions. When a signed-in customer chooses Apply to subscription, Mage shows their active subscriptions and they pick the one to discount. Customers only ever see their own subscriptions.

Can free shipping rewards be applied to a Skio subscription?

No. Free shipping rewards cannot be applied to Skio subscriptions, because Skio does not support free shipping codes on recurring orders. For those rewards the Apply to subscription button is hidden, and customers can still use the code at checkout as normal.

Can I reward customers for starting a subscription?

Yes. Set the Subscription Milestone rule's threshold to 1. The points or store credit are awarded a few minutes after the customer's first subscription order is paid. If they buy two subscription products in one order, each new subscription counts separately.

Do subscription milestones count orders from before I turned the rule on?

No. Customers who were already past the threshold when you switched the rule on are not awarded retroactively. New subscribers, and existing subscribers who have not yet reached the threshold, are awarded when they reach it.

Why do my customers not see the "Apply to subscription" button?

Check that the Skio card shows as Connected, that "Show apply to subscription" is turned on for the block, that the reward's purchase type is Subscription or Both (not One-time), that the reward is not a free shipping reward, and that the customer is signed in and has an active Skio subscription.

What plan do I need?

A Mage Essential plan or above.

What happens to existing discounts if I disconnect Skio?

Discounts already applied to subscriptions stay in place and Skio keeps honouring them at renewal. Disconnecting only stops new subscription discounts and new milestone awards until you reconnect.
