Discount Reward

How to offer a fixed amount or percentage discount, a flexible amount the customer chooses, or a store credit redemption.

Written by Kris James

A discount reward gives the customer money off their order in exchange for their balance. When they redeem it, they receive a unique discount code to use at checkout.

There are three ways to set it up:

  • Fixed amount: a set cost for a set discount, for example 500 points for $5 off.

  • Percentage: a set cost for a percentage off, for example 1,000 points for 10% off.

  • Flexible amount: the customer chooses how much to redeem, within a range you set, and the discount scales to match.

How to add a discount reward

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.

  2. In the Redeeming Points section, click Add Reward and choose Discount.

  3. Choose Fixed or Percentage.

  4. Fill in the settings below and click Save.

Flexible amount

With a flexible amount the customer picks how much to redeem, and the discount scales at a rate you set. Many merchants use this to run a cashback style program alongside a Purchase rule.

  1. Under Redemption type, choose Flexible amount.

  2. Set the Conversion Rate: how many points equal how much discount, for example 100 points = $1.00.

  3. Set the Minimum redemption and Maximum redemption per order.

  4. Click Save.

For example, at 100 points = $1.00 with a minimum of 100 and a maximum of 5,000, customers can redeem anywhere between $1 and $50 off per order.

If your program runs on store credit, this is the only reward available and it is called Store credit redemption. The rate is always 1:1, so the amount the customer redeems is the discount they receive. You only set the minimum and maximum a customer can apply per order, as money amounts. One store credit redemption can exist per program.

Common mistakes to avoid

Setting a minimum spend lower than the discount. A $10 discount with a $5 minimum spend can make an order free. Set the minimum spend above the discount amount.

Allowing every combination. If the code can stack with your other discounts, customers can combine a sale, a code and a reward on one order. Leave combinations off unless you want stacking.

Troubleshooting

The code is not working at checkout

  • Check the order meets the minimum spend and includes an eligible product if the reward applies to specific products.

  • Check the code has not expired.

  • If another discount is already on the order, check the combination settings.

  • Open the customer in the Customers section to see the code and its status.
