Leave a Review Earning Rule

How to reward customers for leaving a product review through Judge.me, Okendo or Loox.

Written by Kris James

The Leave a review rule rewards customers each time they leave a product review through your reviews app. Reviews are detected automatically, so there is nothing for the customer to claim.

This guide covers Judge.me, and Klaviyo Reviews in its own section below. Okendo, Yotpo Reviews, Reviews.io, Junip and Loox use Shopify Flow instead and have their own guides: Okendo Reviews, Yotpo Reviews, Reviews.io Reviews, Junip Reviews and Loox Reviews. Using a different reviews app? Ask us in live chat.

Step 1: Connect Judge.me

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Integrations.

  2. Find Judge.me and click Connect.

  3. Follow the prompts to authorise the connection. The status changes to Connected when it is done.

Step 2: Add the rule

  1. Click Loyalty in the left menu.

  2. In the Earning Points section, click Add Earning Rule.

  3. Under Essentials, choose Leave a review.

  4. Under Select your review app, choose the app your store uses: Judge.me, Klaviyo Reviews, Okendo, Yotpo Reviews, Reviews.io, Junip or Loox.

  5. In Amount earned, enter the amount to award per review.

  6. Optional: enter a Photo review amount or a Video review amount to award a different amount for reviews with photos or a video. Leave them empty to use the amount above. If a review has both, the video amount is used.

  7. Optional: tick Set a limit on how often customers can earn points for leaving a review, then enter a Frequency limit and choose a Frequency unit (Minutes, Hours, Days or Years). For example, 30 Days means a customer is rewarded for one review at most every 30 days.

  8. Click Save.

The photo and video amounts depend on the review app. Photo review amount is available for Judge.me, Klaviyo Reviews, Okendo, Junip and Loox. Video review amount is available for Judge.me and Okendo. Yotpo Reviews and Reviews.io award the same amount for every review.

How it works

  • The rule appears in Ways to Earn on your storefront.

  • When a customer submits a review through Judge.me, Mage receives it and rewards the customer automatically once the review is published. A review waiting for moderation is rewarded when it is published.

  • Each review is rewarded once. Mage does not limit rewards per product: to limit how often a customer can earn, set the frequency limit in the rule.

  • The reviewer must be a customer in your loyalty program. Guest reviews, and reviews Mage cannot match to a loyalty customer, earn nothing.

  • Only reviews submitted through the review app selected in the rule count. Reviews left elsewhere are not detected.

  • Reviews left before the rule was turned on are not rewarded.

Mention the reward in your Judge.me review request email. Customers are far more likely to review when they know there is something in it for them.

Using Klaviyo Reviews

Klaviyo Reviews works through your Klaviyo connection, so there is no separate reviews app to connect.

  1. Connect Klaviyo from the Integrations page. See How to Set Up the Klaviyo Integration.

  2. In the Leave a review rule, under Select your review app, choose Klaviyo Reviews and click Save.

  • If the rule shows Klaviyo is not connected, connect Klaviyo first.

  • If the rule shows Reconnect Klaviyo to enable reviews, your Klaviyo connection was made before review access was available. Reconnect Klaviyo from the Integrations page.

  • Product reviews and star ratings count, once their status in Klaviyo is published or featured. Questions and store reviews do not earn.

  • The customer is matched by the email address on the review, so it must be the email of a customer in your loyalty program.

  • Reviews with photos can earn the Photo review amount. There is no video amount for Klaviyo Reviews.

Common mistakes to avoid

Adding the rule before connecting Judge.me. The rule will look active but nothing is awarded until the integration is connected.

Setting the reward very high. Large rewards attract short, low-effort reviews written only to claim them.

Troubleshooting

A customer left a review but did not earn

  • Check Judge.me still shows as Connected on the Integrations page.

  • Check the review was submitted through Judge.me and that Judge.me is the review app selected in the rule.

  • Check the review is published. A review waiting for moderation earns once it is published.

  • Check the reviewer is a customer in your loyalty program. Guest reviews earn nothing.

  • Check the rule is on and Program Status is Enabled.

  • If the rule has a frequency limit, check the customer was not already rewarded for another review within that period. A review left inside the limit earns nothing.

  • If needed, add the amount manually from the Customers page.

The connection keeps failing

  • Make sure you are connecting from the same Shopify store that has Judge.me installed.

  • Disconnect and reconnect from the Integrations page.
