A multiplier campaign boosts what customers earn from your earning rules for a set period, for example 2x on purchases over a weekend. It is a way to drive orders around a launch, holiday or quiet week without discounting.
There are two kinds of bonus campaign. A Multiplier campaign multiplies the earning rate, which this guide covers. A Tiered campaign gives a flat bonus when an order reaches a spend threshold. See Tiered Bonus Campaign.
Bonus campaigns are available on the Starter plan and above.
How to create a multiplier campaign
From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.
In the Bonus Campaigns section, click Create Campaign.
Enter a Campaign Name. Customers can see this name while the campaign is active, so choose one you are happy to show.
Under Campaign Type, choose Multiplier.
In Multiplier Rules, set a multiplier for each rule you want to boost. Rules left at 1x are not part of the campaign.
Under Status on the right, choose Scheduled. A new campaign starts as Draft, and a draft is saved but never runs.
Set the start and end date and time on the right. A scheduled campaign needs a start time that has not passed yet.
Check the Summary panel, then click Create Campaign.
A Scheduled campaign starts and ends automatically at the times you set, in your store's timezone. A Draft campaign does not start: open it, change its status to Scheduled and save.
Campaign settings
Setting | What it does |
Multiplier Rules | A multiplier for each earning rule in the list. Purchase at 2x doubles purchase earnings. A signup reward of 10 at 2x becomes 20. Most campaigns boost Purchase only. Submit a Receipt and Photo Challenge rules are not in the list and cannot be boosted. |
Product & Collection Bonus | Optional. Limits the purchase multiplier to specific products or collections. Everything else in the order earns at the normal rate. |
Required Products | Under Advanced Settings. Optional. The whole order only qualifies for the campaign if it contains at least one of these products. |
Stack with VIP tier multipliers | Under Advanced Settings. Off by default. When it is off, the multipliers do not stack: each customer earns whichever is higher, their VIP tier multiplier or the campaign multiplier. When it is on, the two are multiplied together. For example, take a purchase worth 100 points before any multiplier, a 1.5x Gold member and a 2x campaign. With it off the member earns 200 points (2x, the higher of the two). With it on they earn 300 points (1.5 x 2 = 3x). A member whose tier multiplier is higher than the campaign multiplier keeps their tier multiplier. Not shown on store credit programs. |
Start and end | When the campaign runs, in your store's timezone. |
Product & Collection Bonus and Required Products work at different levels. The first controls which items earn the bonus rate. The second controls whether the order qualifies at all. You can use both together.
If your Purchase rule uses Set custom points per VIP tier, the campaign works with those tier rates in the same way. With Stack with VIP tier multipliers off, a customer earns the higher of their tier rate and the base rate multiplied by the campaign. With it on, the campaign multiplies their tier rate. For example, with a base rate of 5 points per $1, a Gold rate of 8 points per $1 and a 2x campaign, a Gold member's $100 order earns 1,000 points with it off (the higher of 800 and 1,000) and 1,600 points with it on. Store credit programs always work as if it is off.
A campaign cannot be limited to a group of customers or a VIP tier. It applies to every customer who earns from the rules you boost.
Where customers see the campaign
While the campaign is active, customers see it in these places:
Rewards Widget: the ways to earn page shows a banner telling customers they can earn a bonus until the campaign's end date.
Account Sidebar: if your sidebar has a Ways to Earn page, it shows a banner with the campaign name.
Product Points Calculator: if the campaign boosts the Purchase rule, product pages show the boosted amount for the products the campaign applies to. You can add the campaign name to the calculator's text with the {campaign} placeholder.
Campaign status
Draft: saved but never runs. You can keep editing. To run it, change its status to Scheduled.
Scheduled: will start automatically at its start time. You can still edit it, move it back to Draft or delete it.
Active: running now. Active campaigns cannot be edited or deleted. To stop one, click Cancel next to it in the Bonus Campaigns section, or open it and click Cancel Campaign. To change one, cancel it and create a new campaign.
Completed: reached its end time. It is kept in your campaign history.
Canceled: stopped early with Cancel Campaign. Cancelling ends the campaign immediately, customers stop receiving the bonus straight away, and the campaign cannot be restarted.
Only one campaign can run at a time. Use the filter in the Bonus Campaigns section to switch between Active & Upcoming and Past Campaigns, and open a campaign's menu to edit or delete it. A campaign can only be deleted before it starts, while it is Draft or Scheduled.
Campaign results
Click Analytics next to an Active or Completed campaign in the Bonus Campaigns section to open Campaign Analytics. While the campaign is running, the numbers update as orders come in.
Revenue Generated: the item subtotal of the orders that earned the campaign bonus, after discounts and before tax and shipping.
Qualifying Orders: the orders that earned the bonus during the campaign.
% Qualifying: the share of loyalty member orders placed during the campaign that earned the bonus.
Average Order Value: the average item subtotal of the qualifying orders.
Bonus Points Awarded: the total bonus the campaign gave. On store credit programs this is Bonus Credit Awarded.
Participating Customers: the number of different customers who earned the bonus.
Revenue Over Time: a chart of that revenue for each day of the campaign.
Top Performers: the Top spenders and Top products of the campaign.
Common mistakes to avoid
Leaving every rule at 1x. The campaign will not save until at least one rule has a multiplier above 1x.
Turning on stacking without checking the totals. With Stack with VIP tier multipliers on, a 3x campaign means 6x for a member on a 2x tier. When you tick it, the form shows what each VIP tier will earn.
Not telling customers. A campaign nobody knows about creates no urgency. Announce it by email or SMS before it starts.
Troubleshooting
The campaign did not start
Open the campaign and check its Status. A Draft campaign never runs.
Change the status to Scheduled, set a start time that has not passed yet, and save.
The campaign is Scheduled but the start time has passed
Check the start time against your store's timezone, not your own.
Refresh the Loyalty page. If it is still Scheduled, contact us in live chat.
Customers are not earning the boosted rate
Check the rule has a multiplier above 1x in the campaign.
Check the order was placed inside the campaign window.
If you set Product & Collection Bonus or Required Products, check the order includes qualifying items.
If the customer's VIP tier multiplier is higher than the campaign multiplier, they keep their tier multiplier unless Stack with VIP tier multipliers is on.
I cannot create a campaign because the dates conflict
Only one campaign can be active at a time. Change or delete the overlapping campaign first, or cancel it if it is already running.
