Gift Reminders Earning Rule

How to let customers save gift occasions, reward them for it, and send reminder emails with a discount code through Klaviyo.

Written by Kris James

Gift Reminders lets customers save the birthdays and anniversaries of people they buy for. Mage rewards them for saving their first reminder, then emails them before each occasion with a discount code.

Reminder emails are sent through Klaviyo, so the Klaviyo integration must be connected. See How to Set Up the Klaviyo Integration.

Step 1: Add the rule

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.

  2. In the Earning Points section, click Add Earning Rule and choose Gift Reminders.

  3. Enter the amount to award when a customer saves their first reminder.

  4. Set the maximum recipients each customer can save, for example 5. This also caps how many discount codes one customer can generate.

  5. Click Save Changes.

Step 2: Set the reminder schedule

After saving, the Reminder Schedule section appears.

  1. Set the First reminder, in days before the occasion, for example 30.

  2. Optionally set a Second and Third reminder. Each must be fewer days than the one before, for example 14 and 7.

With reminders at 30, 14 and 7 days, a customer who saved a birthday on 15 March receives emails on 13 February, 1 March and 8 March.

Step 3: Add the reminder reward

Each reminder email includes a discount code. A reward must be set or no reminders are sent.

  1. In the Gift Reminders settings, scroll to Reminder Reward and click Add Reward.

  2. Choose a fixed discount, percentage discount, free shipping or free product.

  3. Fill in the reward and save. You are returned to the Gift Reminders settings.

One code is created per recipient when the first reminder is sent, and the same code is repeated in the second and third reminders. Codes are locked to the customer's account and cannot be shared.

Step 4: Turn on the Klaviyo event and build the flow

  1. In Mage, go to Integrations > Klaviyo, turn on the Gift Reminder event and click Save.

  2. In Klaviyo, create a flow triggered by the Gift Reminder metric.

  3. Design your email using the properties below.

What customers see

  • A Gift Reminders section in the Account Sidebar.

  • They click Add Recipient and enter a name, relationship, occasion type and date.

  • They are rewarded for their first entry and can add recipients up to your limit.

  • They receive your reminder emails on the schedule you set, each with their discount code.

Good to know

What if a customer changes a date?
Reminders move to the new date. The same code is reused, and a reminder already sent for a date is not sent again.

What if a customer deletes a recipient?
No more reminders are sent for them. Any code already issued stays valid until it expires. Deleting and re-adding a recipient does create a new code, which is why the recipient limit matters.

Do customers need a Klaviyo profile?
No. They only need an email address on their account. Klaviyo creates or matches the profile when the event arrives.

What about 29 February?
In non-leap years those reminders are timed from 28 February.

Can I use this without Klaviyo?
Customers can still save recipients and earn for it, but no reminder emails are sent.
