The Purchase rule rewards customers every time they place a paid order. It is created for you when you install Mage, so you only need to edit it to set your rate.
For the basics of adding, editing and disabling any rule, see Ways to Earn - Overview & Managing Earning Rules.
How to set your earning rate
From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.
In the Earning Points section, click the Purchase rule.
Enter the amount earned and the spend needed to earn it. For example, 5 points for every $1 spent.
Click Save.
The new rate applies to orders placed from that point on.
If your program runs on store credit, enter a money amount instead, for example $0.05 for every $1 spent. Customers see this as 5% cashback on every order.
Purchase rule settings
Setting | What it does |
Earning rule name | The name customers see in Ways to Earn. |
Amount earned for every amount spent | Your earning rate. Spend is measured on the products in the order after discounts. Tax and shipping are not counted. |
Exclude discounted products | When ticked, products bought with a discount code or automatic discount do not earn. Off by default. |
Approval Time | Days to hold the amount as pending before it is added to the balance. Leave at 0 for instant. Set it to match your returns window if you want to avoid clawing back after refunds. |
Custom description | Under Advanced Settings. Replaces the wording customers see under the rule. Leave blank to use the default. |
Set custom points per VIP tier | Under Advanced Settings. Gives each VIP tier its own earning rate. See below. Growth plan and above. |
Custom icon | An image shown next to the rule on your storefront. A default icon is used if you do not upload one. |
Custom rate per VIP tier
If you run VIP tiers, you can give higher tiers a better purchase rate. For example, everyone earns 5 points per $1, while Gold members earn 8 points per $1.
Open the Purchase rule and expand Advanced Settings.
Tick Set custom points per VIP tier.
Enter the amount for each tier. The spend part of the rate is shared and stays the same for every tier.
Click Save.
A few things to know:
Your entry tier always earns the base rate. Its row is locked, so what visitors see before they join is exactly what they earn when they do.
When tier rates are on, they replace the tier's multiplier for purchases. The multiplier still applies to other rules.
Bonus campaigns still apply. A standard campaign multiplies the tier rate (Gold at 8 per $1 with a 2x campaign earns 16 per $1). A campaign set to override VIP tiers gives the customer whichever is higher: their tier rate, or the base rate times the campaign multiplier.
When purchase earnings are awarded
Earnings are awarded when the order is paid.
If an approval time is set, they stay pending until it passes.
If the order is refunded, the earnings are reversed. A partial refund reverses a proportional share. See How Refunds Affect Earnings.
Guest checkouts do not earn. The customer must be signed in to their account when they order.
Common mistakes to avoid
Expecting a rate change to apply to past orders. A new rate only applies to orders placed after you save it.
Turning on Exclude discounted products without telling customers. Shoppers who use a discount code and earn nothing will ask why. Mention it in your program terms.
Troubleshooting
A customer placed an order but did not earn
Check the Purchase rule is on and Program Status is Enabled.
Check the customer was signed in when they ordered.
Check the order was paid and has not been cancelled or refunded.
If Exclude discounted products is on, a discounted order earns nothing on those items.
If you set an approval time, the amount is pending until it passes. The customer's activity log in the Customers section shows the status.
