Set Up the Add to Wishlist Rule

How to set up the Add to Wishlist earning rule so customers earn points or store credit once they have saved a set number of products to their wishlist.

Written by Kris James

Before You Start

Two things need to be in place for customers to earn from this rule:

  1. Wishlists must be turned on for your store. You can check this in Wishlist settings. If wishlists are off, you will see a warning on the rule page and customers will have no way to save products.

  2. Customers must be logged in. Products saved by a logged out visitor do not count until they sign in.

Create the Add to Wishlist Rule

Follow these steps to add the rule to your loyalty program.

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app.

  2. In the left menu, click Loyalty.

  3. Scroll to the Earning Points section and click Add Earning Rule.

  4. Open the Wishlist tab and select Add to wishlist.

  5. Choose how much to award and how many products a customer needs to save.

  6. Click Save. The rule is now Active.

Settings Explained

Every setting on the Add to Wishlist rule page, and what each one does:

Setting

What It Does

Default

Earning rule name

The name customers see in your Ways to Earn list.

Add items to wishlist

Amount to award

The points or store credit the customer receives once they reach your minimum. Awarded once per customer.

100

Minimum wishlist items

How many products a customer needs saved to their wishlist before they earn.

5

Count each product once

When ticked, saving three sizes of the same shirt counts as one item, not three. Untick it if you want every saved variant to count separately.

On

Approval time

How many days to wait before the reward is given. Leave at 0 to award straight away. See the section below.

0 (instant)

Custom description

Found under Advanced Settings. Replaces the wording customers see. Leave it blank to use the default.

Tip

A minimum of 3 to 5 products works well for most stores.

What Your Customers See

Once the rule is active, it appears in the Ways to Earn list in your landing page & widget.

The rule shows how much they will earn and how many products they need to save, for example "100 points for saving 5 products to your wishlist".

  • Clicking the rule opens their wishlist so they can start saving products.

  • As they add products, they get closer to your minimum. There is nothing for them to claim.

  • The moment they save enough products, the reward is added to their account automatically.

Note

The reward is given the next time a customer adds a product to their wishlist. Saving the rule does not reward anyone on its own, even customers who already have plenty of items saved.

Approval Time: Instant or Delayed

Approval time decides whether the reward lands straight away or after a short wait.

Instant (0 days)

  • The customer earns the moment they reach your minimum.

  • Simplest option, and the reward feels immediate.

Delayed (1 day or more)

  • The reward is held for the number of days you choose.

  • When the time is up, the customer's wishlist is checked again.

  • If they still have enough products saved, the reward is added to their account.

  • If they have removed items and dropped below your minimum, the reward is not given. Nothing is shown to the customer, and they can qualify again later by saving more products.

Tip

If you reward store credit, consider setting an approval time of a few days. Store credit is real money and cannot be automatically taken back once it has been given, so the wait discourages anyone from saving a few products, earning, then removing them again.

Customers Who Already Have Wishlists

If customers have been using your wishlist for a while, some of them will already have enough products saved to qualify.

While you are setting your minimum, you may see a message such as "412 customers already have 5+ products saved". This is there so you know what to expect before you turn the rule on.

  • Nobody is rewarded at the moment you save the rule.

  • Each of those customers earns the next time they add a product to their wishlist.

  • Products imported from a previous wishlist app count towards the minimum too.

Tip

If that number looks higher than you are comfortable rewarding, raise your minimum and watch the number update, or lower the amount you award.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Setting the minimum too high. Asking for 20 saved products means most customers will never get there, and the rule stops being motivating. Start at 3 to 5 and increase it later if you want to.

Common Mistake

Turning the rule on while wishlists are switched off. Customers will see a way to earn that they have no way of completing. Check your Wishlist settings first.

Common Mistake

Awarding a large amount of store credit with a low minimum. Check how many customers already qualify before you save, so the cost is not a surprise.

Common Mistake

Expecting existing wishlists to be rewarded straight away. Customers always earn on their next saved product, never in bulk when you save the rule.

Troubleshooting

The rule is not showing in my widget or landing page

  • Check the rule Status is set to Enabled on the rule page.

  • Check your overall Program Status is Enabled on the main Loyalty page.

  • Check that wishlists are turned on in your Wishlist settings.

A customer has enough products saved but has not earned

  • They need to add one more product while the rule is active. Rewards are given on the next saved product, not retroactively.

  • Check they were logged in when they saved the products.

  • Check they have not already earned this reward. It can only be earned once per customer.

  • If Count each product once is ticked, remember that several sizes or colours of the same product only count as one.

A customer earned the reward and then removed their items

  • With an instant reward, points or credit that have already been given stay with the customer.

  • To prevent this, set an approval time of a few days so the wishlist is checked again before the reward is given.

The wording customers see is not what I expected

  • Open Advanced Settings on the rule page and check the Custom description field.

  • Clear the field and save to go back to the default wording.
