Social media rules reward customers for following your accounts or sharing your store. Each rule can be completed once per customer.
Available rules: Follow on Instagram, Follow on TikTok, Follow on Facebook, Follow on X, Subscribe to YouTube, Follow on Pinterest, Share on Facebook and Share on X.
How to add a follow rule
From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.
In the Earning Points section, click Add Earning Rule.
Open the Social Media tab and choose the platform.
Fill in the account field for that platform. What to type is different for each platform: see the list below.
Enter the amount to award.
Optional: under Approval time, set how long to wait before the reward is given, in minutes, hours or days. Leave it at 0 to give the reward straight away.
Click Save.
What to type for each platform
Follow on Instagram: in Instagram handle, enter your handle without the @, for example yourstore.
Follow on TikTok: in TikTok username, enter your username, with or without the @, for example @yourstore.
Follow on Facebook: in Facebook page URL, enter the full URL of your page, for example https://www.facebook.com/yourstore.
Follow on X: in X account name, enter your account name without the @, for example yourstore.
Subscribe to YouTube: in YouTube channel name, enter your channel name without the @, for example yourstore.
Follow on Pinterest: in Pinterest profile name, enter your profile name, for example yourstore.
Only Follow on Facebook takes a URL. For every other follow rule, enter the handle or name on its own. If you paste a full link such as https://www.instagram.com/yourstore, the rule will not save.
How to add a share rule
Share rules open a share window for a page you choose instead of linking to your profile.
Follow the steps above and choose Share on Facebook or Share on X.
In URL to share, enter the full address of the page customers will share, starting with https://, for example a product page or your home page.
For Share on X, enter the post text in Share text (up to 280 characters). It is pre-filled in the post when the customer clicks the button. For Share on Facebook, fill in Share description (up to 300 characters).
Enter the amount to award, set an Approval time if you want one, and click Save.
How it works for customers
The rule appears in Ways to Earn on your storefront with a button. Clicking it opens your profile, or the share window, in a new tab.
That one click is all the customer does. The reward is given straight away, or after the Approval time if you set one. There is no second step to confirm.
Customers need to be logged in to their account to claim.
Each rule can only be earned once per customer. Clicking again does not award more.
Social platforms do not let apps check whether someone followed you, so the reward is based on the customer clicking the button, not on proof that they followed or shared. This is how every loyalty platform handles social rules.
Common mistakes to avoid
Pasting a link where a handle is expected. Only Follow on Facebook takes a URL. For the other follow rules, enter the handle or name only.
Adding platforms you do not use. A rule for a dormant account looks odd to customers. Only add the channels you are active on.
Troubleshooting
Customers say the link does not work
Open your profile yourself in an incognito window to check it is public.
Edit the rule and check the handle, name or URL matches your profile exactly.
The rule will not save
For Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube and Pinterest, enter the handle or name only, not a link.
Leave out the @ (only TikTok accepts it) and do not use spaces.
For Facebook, enter the full page URL, starting with https://.
A customer followed but did not earn
The reward is given when the customer clicks the rule's button on your store while logged in. Following you directly on the platform, without clicking the button, does not earn.
If the rule has an Approval time, the reward is added once that time has passed.
Check they have not already earned this rule. It can only be earned once.
If needed, add the amount manually from the Customers page.
