These three rules reward customers for moments rather than purchases. Each one is set up once and awards automatically.
Rule | When it awards | What the customer needs to do |
Signup | Once, when the account is created | Nothing extra |
Birthday | Once a year, on their birthday | Save their date of birth |
Account Anniversary | Once a year, on the date they joined | Nothing extra |
How to add one of these rules
From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.
In the Earning Points section, click Add Earning Rule.
Under Essentials, choose Signup, Birthday or Account Anniversary.
Enter the amount to award.
Click Save.
The Signup rule is created for you when you install Mage. Edit it to change the amount.
Signup
Awards once, the moment a customer creates an account on your store.
Only accounts created after the rule is on receive it. Existing customers are not rewarded retroactively. To welcome existing customers, adjust their balance from the Customers page or run a drop.
Birthday
Customers must save their date of birth first. They can do this in the Rewards Widget, the Account Sidebar, or your Loyalty Pages.
The reward is given on the birthday itself, once a year.
If a customer adds their birthday after it has already passed this year, they receive it on their next birthday.
Customers receive an email when their birthday reward is given, if the email template is enabled.
Customers will not know to add their birthday unless you tell them. Mention it in your welcome email and on your loyalty page.
Account Anniversary
Awards once a year on the date the customer first created their account. Nothing is needed from the customer.
Applies to all customers, including those who joined before the rule was created. Their next anniversary is rewarded.
Customers receive an email when the reward is given, if the email template is enabled.
Common mistakes to avoid
Creating two rules of the same type. Two Birthday rules award twice on the same day. Keep one of each.
Expecting existing customers to get the signup reward. It only fires when an account is created.
Troubleshooting
A new customer did not get the signup reward
Check the Signup rule is on and Program Status is Enabled.
Check they created an account. A guest checkout does not count.
If they signed up before the rule was turned on, add the amount manually from the Customers page.
Birthday reward was not given
Check the customer has saved a date of birth. You can see it on their profile in the Customers section.
If the birthday passed before the date was saved, or before the rule was on, they receive it next year.
Anniversary reward was not given
Check the rule is on and at least a year has passed since the account was created.
Allow up to 24 hours after the anniversary date.
