Ways to Redeem - Overview & Managing Rewards

What rewards are, the reward types you can offer, and how to add, reorder, disable and delete them.

What are rewards?

Rewards are what customers spend their balance on. When a customer redeems a reward, the cost is deducted from their balance and they receive a discount code to use at checkout, or in the case of a custom reward, a message from you.

Active rewards appear in the Ways to Redeem section of your Rewards Widget, Account Sidebar and Loyalty Pages. Redeemed rewards are kept in the customer's rewards list so they can find their code again later.

Reward types

Reward

What the customer gets

Guide

Discount

A fixed amount or percentage off their order. Can be a set reward, for example 500 points for $5 off, or a flexible amount the customer chooses.

Free Shipping

Shipping costs removed from their order.

Free Product

A specific product for free, added to their cart automatically if you choose.

Custom

Something you fulfil yourself, such as a consultation or event invite. No discount code. Growth plan and above.

If your program runs on store credit, there is one reward type: Store credit redemption. Customers choose how much of their balance to apply to an order and it comes off as an equal discount. See Discount Reward for how to set it up.

How to add a reward

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the Mage Loyalty app and click Loyalty.

  2. In the Redeeming Points section, click Add Reward.

  3. Choose a reward type.

  4. Fill in the reward and click Save.

The reward is available to customers as soon as you save it.

How to manage rewards

Every reward is listed in the Redeeming Points section. Open a reward's menu to:

  • Edit: change the name, cost or settings. Changes apply to new redemptions. Codes already issued are not changed.

  • Disable: hide the reward from customers without deleting it. Turn it back on at any time.

  • Move up and Move down: change the order rewards are shown in on your storefront.

  • Delete: remove the reward. This cannot be undone. Codes customers already redeemed keep working.

VIP tier rewards

Rewards added here are available to every member. To offer a reward only to customers in a certain VIP tier, add it from the tier itself under VIP Tiers instead.

Common mistakes to avoid

Having no reward at all. Customers can earn but have nothing to spend on, so the program stalls. Add at least one reward before you launch.

Pricing rewards without checking your earning rate. If customers earn 5 points per $1 and a $5 discount costs 100 points, a $20 order pays for it. Work out how much spend each reward represents before you save.

Troubleshooting

A reward is not showing on my storefront

  • Check the reward is enabled in the Redeeming Points section.

  • Check Program Status at the top of the Loyalty page is Enabled.

A customer's discount code is not working at checkout

  • Check the order meets the reward's minimum spend.

  • Check the code has not expired. Each reward has its own expiry setting.

  • Check the reward's combination settings allow it to be used with any other discount on the order.

  • Open the customer in the Customers section to see the code, its status and when it was issued.
