Quick Start Guide: Launch Mage Loyalty

Set up Mage Loyalty from scratch: enable the app embed, turn on your program, add earning rules and rewards, enable the Rewards Widget and create your loyalty page.

Written by Kris James

The Mage Loyalty app embed must be enabled on your live Shopify theme before anything in this guide will appear on your storefront. The steps are included below, and the full guide is here: How to Enable the Mage Loyalty App Embed.

This guide takes you from a fresh install to a live loyalty program. By the end, customers will be able to earn points, redeem rewards, open the Rewards Widget from any page, and learn about your program on a dedicated loyalty page.

When you first open Mage Loyalty, the Home dashboard will show zeros. That is expected. The numbers fill in once customers start joining and earning. Home may also show a Finish setting up your loyalty program checklist. It covers the same setup as this guide and marks each step as completed as you go.

Step 1: Enable the App Embed

The app embed connects Mage Loyalty to your Shopify theme. Shopify does not switch it on automatically, so you need to do this once per theme.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.

  2. On your current live theme, click Edit theme.

  3. In the left sidebar of the theme editor, click the App embeds icon.

  4. Find Mage (listed under Mage Loyalty) and toggle it on.

  5. Click Save in the top right corner.

App embeds are set per theme. If you publish a new theme later, you will need to enable the app embed again on that theme.

Step 2: Enable Your Loyalty Program

Customers cannot earn or redeem points until the program is switched on. You can set up your earning rules and rewards first and enable the program when you are ready to go live.

  1. In the Mage Loyalty app, click Loyalty in the left menu.

  2. Under Loyalty Program Settings, turn on the Program Status toggle.

  3. The status badge changes to Enabled.

To try the program yourself before customers do, turn on Test Mode under Settings first. While it is on, only customers on your test list can earn and redeem.

Step 3: Set Up Your Earning Rules

Earning rules decide how customers collect points. Mage Loyalty adds a Purchase rule and a Signup rule for you, but both start switched off, so turn them on first.

Turn on the starter rules

  1. On the Loyalty page, scroll to Earning Points.

  2. Open the menu on the Purchase rule and click Enable. Do the same for Signup.

  3. To change how many points a rule gives, click Edit, update the points, then click Save.

Add more rules

  1. Click Add Earning Rule and pick a rule.

  2. Set the number of points, then click Save.

Good rules to start with:

Rule

Why it helps

Purchase

Rewards every order. This is the core of your program.

Signup

Gives new members a starting balance and a reason to create an account.

Birthday

Brings customers back once a year with a personal touch.

Follow on social media

Grows your audience on Instagram, TikTok and more.

Leave a review

Builds social proof. Requires a connected reviews app such as Judge.me or Okendo.

For every rule and its settings, see Ways to Earn - Overview & Managing Earning Rules.

Step 4: Add Your Rewards

Rewards are what customers spend their points on. Keep the first reward within reach so new members can redeem soon after joining.

  1. On the Loyalty page, scroll to Redeeming Points.

  2. Click Add Reward and choose a reward type.

  3. Set the points cost and reward value, then click Save.

Most stores start with one or two of these:

Step 5: Enable the Rewards Widget

The Rewards Widget is a floating button that sits on every page of your store. Customers click it to join, check their points, see ways to earn and redeem rewards, without leaving the page they are on.

  1. In the Mage Loyalty app, click Rewards Widget in the left menu.

  2. At the top of the settings panel, turn on the Rewards widget toggle.

  3. Adjust the launcher, text and colours to match your brand. The preview updates as you go.

  4. Click Save.

Open your storefront and the widget button should appear in the corner of the page.

Step 6: Create Your Loyalty Program Page

A loyalty page is a dedicated page on your store that explains your program: how it works, how to earn, what customers can redeem and your VIP tiers. It is the page you link to from your menu, footer and emails.

Create the page in Shopify

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Pages and click Add page.

  2. Set the title to Loyalty Program and leave the content blank.

  3. Click Save. Under Search engine listing, check the page address ends in /pages/loyalty-program. If it does not, click edit and change the URL handle to loyalty-program.

Add your content in Mage Loyalty

  1. In the Mage Loyalty app, click Loyalty Pages in the left menu.

  2. Under Storefront, find Landing Page and click Customise.

  3. Use the sections on the left (Hero, How It Works, Ways to Earn, Ways to Redeem, VIP Tiers, FAQ) to edit the wording on your page, then click Save.

Add the blocks in your theme

  1. At the top of the Landing Page editor, click Customise page in Shopify Theme Editor. Your loyalty page opens in the theme editor.

  2. Click Add section, open the Apps tab, and add the Mage Loyalty blocks you want, such as the Hero Banner, Ways to Earn and Ways to Redeem.

  3. Drag the blocks into order, adjust their styling, and click Save.

Most themes use one template for every page. To stop the loyalty blocks appearing on your other pages, create a new page template first: in the theme editor, open the template menu at the top, click Create template, and name it loyalty. Then in Online Store > Pages, open your Loyalty Program page and set Theme template to loyalty.

Link to the page

  1. In Shopify, go to Online Store > Navigation.

  2. Open your main menu or footer menu and add a link to your Loyalty Program page.

  3. Click Save.

The wording on the page is set in the Mage Loyalty app. Layout and styling, such as colours, images and spacing, are set in the Shopify theme editor.

For each section of the page, see Customize Your Hero Banner and the related articles in that collection.

Ask Shopify Sidekick

Mage Loyalty works with Shopify Sidekick, the AI assistant built into your Shopify admin. You can ask it questions about your loyalty program and your customers in plain English, such as "How is my loyalty program set up?" or "What is the points balance for [email protected]?". There is nothing to set up.

See Shopify Sidekick for more examples.

What to Set Up Next

Once your program is live, these are the most common next steps:

Feature

What it does

Rewards customers for sending friends to your store.

Gives your best customers extra perks as they spend more.

Brands the emails customers receive when they earn and redeem. Every email starts switched off, so turn on the ones you want to send.

Sends points balances and loyalty events to your email flows.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the app embed. Nothing from Mage Loyalty will show on your storefront until the app embed is enabled and saved on your live theme.

Enabling the app embed on the wrong theme. Make sure you click Edit theme on the theme marked as your current live theme, not a theme in your library.

Leaving the loyalty program disabled. Customers can see the widget and page, but they will not earn or redeem points until Program Status is enabled.

Forgetting to enable the starter rules. The Purchase and Signup rules start switched off. Customers will not earn points on orders until you enable the Purchase rule.

Using a different page address. The Landing Page editor opens /pages/loyalty-program, so your Shopify page must use the handle loyalty-program.

Forgetting to link the loyalty page. Customers will not find the page unless you add it to your menu or footer.

Troubleshooting

I enabled everything but nothing is showing on my storefront

  • Confirm the Mage Loyalty app embed is enabled and saved on your current live theme. This is the most common cause.

  • Check that you clicked Save after each change.

  • Open your storefront in an incognito browser window to rule out caching.

The Rewards Widget is not appearing

  • Confirm the Rewards widget toggle is on and your changes are saved.

  • If another element on your theme sits on top of the widget, increase the widget's z-index in the Rewards Widget settings.

Customers are not earning points

  • Check that Program Status shows Enabled on the Loyalty page.

  • Check that the earning rule shows Active. The starter Purchase and Signup rules start switched off.

Customers are not receiving emails

  • Every customer email starts switched off. Click Email Templates in the left menu and turn on each email you want to send.

My loyalty page shows a "page not found" error

  • Check the page exists in Online Store > Pages and is set to Visible.

  • Check the page's URL handle is loyalty-program.

  • Check that your navigation link points to that page.
